SA Maths Foundation (SAMF)

#QandASession with Kgaogelo Bopape (Grade 12) from Horizon International School in Gauteng, who is one of the six learners to represent SA in the International Mathematical Olympiad later this month.#GetToKnowMe#IMO2020How do you prepare for the IMO? It is a continuous effort throughout high school. Finding new insights and perspectives on Math Olympiad problems and continuous growth by trying intriguing new problems which push my mathematical and creative abilities to their limit. Why is mathematics important to you? Contrary to popular belief, it is not complicated, abstract equations that draw people, like me, towards maths. Rather, how it is used to gain new fascinating insights and ideas about the world around us. It is also how one can tackle highly challenging problems by applying ideas from seemingly unrelated concepts and unravelling how all these ideas link together. Lastly, it is the sudden jolt of adrenaline that comes after solving a problem that one has been morbidly staring at for days. What are your plans after school? I hope to study Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. To find new ways to tackle mine and the world’s problems through AI and various “mathematical” techniques. I also hope to venture out into other parts of the world to find and nurture other passions, like art and music, outside of the math bubble. Any advice you have for learners who struggle with mathematics? It would be dishonest to say that there is a one-size-fits-all answer to this and more so to say that I know what it is. However, this may apply to most people. Try to approach those whose mathematical abilities are just considerably above yours so that you can learn more effective ways to approach math questions from someone whose thought process you can understand and relate to.

As our Matriculants embark on their journey ahead, we wish them the very best for their Preliminary Examinations.
